VolleyballVolleyball Rules
Trapper's Pizza Pub
Summer 2008

1.  Games will be played to 25 using a Rally scoring method with a cap. Games end when the first team reaches 25.
    A.  Matches will be 3 games, all 3 games will be played if time allows.
    B.  This year, the coin flip is FINAL and there will be no switching sides on the third game.  So,    when you pick side or serve, make sure to take into account the wind and placement of the sun because you may be playing on one side for 2 out of 3 games.
   C.   All decisions made by the referee are final!

2.  Games must begin on time.  Teams are given a 10 minute cushion to get their team on the court to begin the game.  After 10 minutes are up, the team not present must forfeit.  If this team shows up within thier slotted playing time, and there is time left for any games, the opposing team can choose to play for points, but they can only play games for the rest of thier slotted playing time.

3.  Games will be played 4 vs. 4 with AT LEAST ONE FEMALE ON THE COURT AT ALL TIMES.

   A.  Each team's roster that was turned in during registration will be used to determine the teams.  This year, you may have up to 10 people on your roster.  The people playing on the court must be on your roster (see "E" for more information).  You will have three weeks to make any corrctions or changes to your roster, however, after three weeks, the roster becomes final.
   B.  Teams may play with fewer than 4 players in the event of teammates not arriving on time.  However, there must be one female on the court.
   C.  Any team that picks up a player that is not on their roster takes a chance of forfeiting that match.  If the non-roster player is not brought to the referee's attention before the first match is over, there is no penalty and the match will count toward overall standings.
   D.  All Players that are brought to the attention of the referee for being non-roster players must present I.D. if necessary.
   E.  All players must sign in before the game.  Any player that has participated in at least 3 matches (9 games) will be qualified to play in the finals and the playoffs.

There will be a pentaly system inplemented this season to prevent any unsportsmanlike conduct.  This is completely at the discretion of the referee and must be adhered to be all players in the league.  It is as follows:

       1st  offense:  Warning
2nd offense:   Penalty = loss of rally
       3rd  offense:  Expulsion from game
4th  offense:  Disqualification from entire match
During Play
1.  Objects in play
   A.  Everything within the fence is in play
   B.  Contact with the ball must be made before a player comes in contact with any objects not on the court. i.e. use of tables, posts, etc. to aid in making contact will not count and the rally ends.
   C.  If the ball contacts the lamp or volleyball posts at any time, the play is over.  Playing off the uprights or lamp posts is no longer allowed.

2.  Net Contact
   A.

3.  Center line
   A.  Players may cross the center line without penalty as long as that player does not interfere with play on the oppposite side or violate the Net Contact rule.

4.  Players may contact the ball with ANY part of thier body
-As long as contact is clean (not a severe carry or double hit)

5.  Let Serve Rule
    A.  This rule says that the ball may contact the net on the serve and still be in play.
**this rule will apply to both leagues this year**

6.  Setting the serve
    A.  Setting the serve will be allowed in both levels, but will be called more often regarding carries in the A level leagues.

7.  Service attempt
    A.  Each player will be given one service attempt before actual serve must be completed.
Ex.)  If a toss is poor, the player may let the ball drop and reserve.  If the ball comes in contact with the player during this attempt, it will be counted as a final serve.  (This means the player may not catch the ball during the first attempt.)

8.  Screening
    A.  There is no screening allowed.  The penalty system will be in effect for any team that is deliberately screening.   (Screening is intentionally blocking the opposing team's view of the server during the serve.)
    B.  Any unintentional screening will be brought to the attention of the player doing it and they will be asked to correct thier court position.

9.  Positions
    A.  There is an order for service only.  There are no set positions on the court, and players may be in any position at any time.
    B.  Players must, however, serve in one order throughout the game.  If a player is found to be serving more oftem than every fourth player, the result will be a loss of rally for that team.

10.  Substitutions
    A.  Numner of substitutions are unlimited
    B.  Substitutions may only be made at the service position

11.  Timeouts
    A.  Each team will be allowed one timeout per game (3 per match)
    B.  Timeouts are 30 seconds long

12.  Breaks between games in a match
    A.  EACH BREAK WILL BE FOR 3 MINUTES

13.   Game Delays
    A.  Any team not on the court at the end of the 3 minutes for a game break, or 30 seconds for a timeout will lose the first rally.

14.  Carries
    A.  Carries will be allowed (unless extremely blatant - underhand) in the B-level leagues
    B.  Carried will be allowed to a certain extent in the A levels at the discretion of the referee.  A level leagues will be called tighter than B level.

15.  Attack Hits
    A.  An attacker must contact the ball on his / her own side of the net
    B.  Crossing over the net after the attack will be allowed, but making contact across the net during an attack will not be permitted.
    C.  There is no attacking the serve.  (Attacking the serve means that you must return the serve with either a bump or a set.  You cannot spike or block a serve.  This will be more lenient with B-league.  We will allow palyers to return serve with thier hands over their head as long as they are not in the front row thus creating a block and as long as it is NOT a spike.)

16.  Blocking
    A.  A player may not reach over the net before the third attack hit.  Once the third attack hit is made by the attacking team, the blocking player may then reach over the net to block provided he does not violate the net contact rules.

17.  Coin toss will determine the service

18.  Scoring system:
          2                 =       all 3 games won
          1 1/2          =        2 of 3 games won
          1/2             =        1 of 3 won
          0                =        No games won

This scoring system will determine the playoff schedule.  Playoffs will be on a Saturday or Sunday at the end of the season, the date of which will be announced by the third week of play.
